Presentation & Content

Presentation of the ethical, scientific, medical, social, educational and societal prospects of the psychobiological data and the naturalist philosophy.

Summary

Taking into account the ecological environment and psychobiological reality of Man would imply changes in ethical and morals values, ways of life and social and societal organisation.

The society would be organised, in a global and coherent way, according to a frame of reference where the human being, in its psychobiological dimension, would have a central place.

A - Ethical prospects

Principle of "bionormed ethics"

Although one cannot find simple and obvious ethical answers in the observation of nature, it seems nevertheless inadequate - according to the results of this research task, and in a particularly long-term objective - to dissociate ethical reflexion from the biological reality of the world.

From the point of view of a human and social sustainable development, it would seem that ethical values should be founded, at least partially, on the principles which govern the dynamics of the biological systems.

This bionormed ethics would imply a reflexion on the "natural bases of ethics" (Changeux 1993) and on the relevance of these bionormed values in the establishment of moral standards guiding the educational and social action (Kirsch 1993, Ruse 1993).

B - Social prospects

Dynamics of restricted groups

One of the implications of the psychobiological data relevant to the social context relates to the micro-social level, i.e. the dynamics of the restricted groups.

It would seem that the human being is in positive psychological situation (even optimal) when he is, in an autonomous way ("praxic" need), in emotional interaction ("philic" need) with a group of 6-8 people on average. It would thus seem interesting, on the social standing, to support all the types of situation (of work, of education, of formation, ...) which are based on this dynamics.

Principle of "global coherence" and of "adequacy"

Although the human being is able to adapt to many very different situations, it would nevertheless seem to exist somatic, emotional and cognitive constraints.

It would seem that not taken into account of these constraints would involve somatic or psychic dysfunctions, having also repercussions at the relational and social level, detrimental to the person itself as well as to the whole of the society.

From the point of view of a sustainable human and social development, it would seem necessary to take into account, in a process of global coherence, the ecological constraints of the environment as well as the psychobiological constraints of the living organisms, and to propose only industrial, economic, political, educational and social situations, which are in adequacy and coherence with the constraints and the fundamental dynamics of the biological systems and particularly of the constraints of the somato-psychic dynamics of the human being.

C - Educational prospects

[ NB : Currently, detailed and updated texts are only available in French ]

The two main principal implications of the psychobiological data relevant to education relate to the learning and socialisation.

As far as learning is concerned, it would seem that the cerebral structure can treat only certain types of information and only in one certain manner, which would imply the need to adapt the didactic sequences to the cognitivo-emotional characteristics of learning.

As far as socialisation is concerned, the lack of genetic or instinctual programming of the elaborate behaviors (parental, communication, ...) would imply the need to define, after ethical reflection, the exact contents of the various pro-social behaviors as well as the didactic methods of their learning.

D - Medical prospects

[ NB : Currently, detailed and updated texts are only available in French ]

The precise knowledge of the somato-psychic dynamics of the human organism would be a fundamental basis of a therapeutic, and particularly psychotherapeutic, action both adapted and efficient.

According to the results of this research task, it would seem possible to outline an etiologic classification of diseases and a general model of (psycho)pathological dynamics.

Figure 5-3 : General etiologic classification of diseases reduced

According to the global psychobiological model of the human behavior, in the absence of pathogenic or traumatic external agents, genetic anomalies or degenerative diseases, it would seem that the development of the person is in a positive dynamics when neurostructural and psychic needs are satisfied and the majority of the emotions lived through actual experiences are positive (pleasure, joy, interest, surprise, ...).

On the other hand, the development of the person would enter a pathological dynamics in the event of chronic non-satisfaction of one or several somatic needs, and would enter a psychopathological dynamics in the event of chronic non-satisfaction of one or several neurostructural and psychic needs, and/or when one or more negative emotions (fear/anxiety, disgust, shame, culpability, ...) are lived in too an intense way.

Supposing that this global theoretical model would correspond to the reality of the psychic dynamics, its implications, preventive as well as therapeutic, would be important.
